Passage and Comments

Resisting temptation is something we must all do. So its good to be reminded of the things the LORD hates.

16 There are six things that the LORD hates,

seven that are an abomination to him:

17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,

and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked plans,

feet that make haste to run to evil,

19 a false witness who breathes out lies,

and one who sows discord among brothers. (Pr 6:16–19)

1) eyes – haughty eyes (arrogant, proud, supercilious, lofty, lordly, uppish)

2) mouth – lying tongue (dishonesty)

3) hands – violence on innocents

4) hearts – devising wicked plans

5) feet – haste to perform evil

Notice the pattern of imagery related to the body. Interesting. Avoid these things.

6) false witness against others

7) one who divides brothers

Story of Jesus

We still live in a time where we are constantly tempted and we need to keep checking our hearts and actions to verify if we are in the faith (2 Cor 13.5-7). Yet we have a promise;

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Cor 10:12–13)

Because of our relationship with God, he is eager to answer our prayers in finding relief from temptation and helping us flee it. So as sons and daughters of God lets do that.
