Luke 14-16 Parable: Seats at the Wedding Feast

From Luke 14-16

Gospel Jesus is risen Christ

Jesus doesn’t like pride. He values humility. Here we see him giving instructions for how we should treat one another. Jesus encourages his people into service and preferring others above ourselves. Its hard to do, but that’s what he wants. Q. Where do you sit on the family table?

This post is part of my bible in a year series.

Passage and Comments

Jesus instructs his listeners in humility.

7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk 14.7-11)

If you take a good seat, you will always be in danger of being demoted because the Lord will esteem someone over you. It is better to take the lowest seat and depend on the Lord to raise you up to a better position.

Is this something we care about? How well we are esteemed by the Lord? By people? What does this look like for us today? How can we take the lowest seat? Are we taking the highest seat?
